What is a seed?

A seed may seem small and simple, but it's actually a complete package of life in dormancy. In this blog post, you'll discover what a seed is , how it works , the stages it goes through during sowing and planting, and what it needs to grow into a strong plant.

What does a seed do?

A seed is how plants reproduce . Inside the seed is a germ , a kind of tiny plant in dormant state, along with nutrients to support its initial growth. The seed coat protects all of this until conditions are perfect for sowing. Without seeds, there are no new plants. They are therefore essential in the cycle of plant life. Whether you want to plant flowers , vegetables, or herbs, it all starts with a seed .

What does a seed need to grow?

A seed doesn't need much—just the right conditions. When you sow, water , warmth , and oxygen are the three most important ingredients.

  • Water activates the seed: it absorbs water and 'awakens'.
  • Heat accelerates activity in the seed.
  • Oxygen is necessary for the energy the germ uses to grow.

Sunlight only becomes important once the seed is
hatched. From then on, the plant will use photosynthesis to generate its own energy.
to make.

The four stages of sowing and growing

Below, you'll read step by step how a seed turns into a full-fledged plant . Each stage is briefly explained, with a suggestion and accompanying photos.

Stage 1: Seed in dormancy

The seed is stored dry, waiting for the right conditions. This is the dormant phase: the sprout inside is dormant, but ready to awaken as soon as sowing begins.

Phase 2: Emergence and germination

As soon as you plant the seed and give it enough water , the sprout begins to grow. The seed coat breaks open, and the radicle emerges first – it immediately seeks out the soil.

Stage 3: Formation of the first leaves

The seedling continues to grow and pushes itself up from the soil. The first two leaves you see are called cotyledons – these are the "starter leaves" that nourish the young plant before it produces true leaves.

Phase 4: Growing Stronger and Growing Further

In this phase, the plant begins to form true leaves and becomes sturdier. The roots grow deeper, and sunlight now plays a greater role. The plant begins photosynthesis —the process of converting sunlight into energy.

Stage 5: Ready for outdoor planting or repotting

Once the seedling is strong enough, you can transplant it to a larger pot or into the ground. From there, it will grow into a mature plant – hopefully with new flowers or fruits full of... new seeds.
